Advocating for yourself is a valuable and active part of growing in your career—it’s not just reserved for when you're in initial interviews, an annual review, or are feeling frustrated or under-appreciated.

Self-advocacy IS about being able to effectively stand in and speak about your own value and what you bring to the table.

It is NOT about making things more significant than they are and touting how you are superior to everyone else.

There are many ways you can, and should, be advocating for yourself- you just need to know when and how to do it: seizing opportunities, adopting new tools or gaining skills, proposing different ways to work, networking, retaining credit for your contributions, setting boundaries and many other various opportunities.

It also means being comfortable with showcasing your accomplishments at high-intent moments (e.g. performance reviews) and low-intent moments (e.g. "I updated this spreadsheet with my research and was able to...") to let others know about the value you are bringing to the table.

It is not just OK... you actually NEED to be able to own the value you bring to an organization and share the contributions you make and the ultimate results you help to provide to those around you.
